Solid Fuel Stove - Coal Merchants Dublin

As austerity bites everywhere and oil prices continue on an upward spiral, Coal Merchants across the nation have seen a slight but welcomed upturn in business. Meanwhile, natural gas prices have increased by more than 30% in Ireland in the last year alone. Some of these are returning customers who had changed to oil or gas heating some years ago when times were better, but are now using their existing open fire again in the evenings and at weekends as a suppliment to their main supply, and to significantly reduce their oil or gas bills at the same time. Others are people who are now discovering the warm and welcoming wonder of an open fire for the first time. Furthermore, an increasing number of families are installing one of the many stylish and highly efficient solid fuel stoves that are available on the market now. What’s the common denominator among these people? 1. More predictable and more easily managed bills and 2. The unbeatable cosy comfort of a real fire.
Robert Hudson of Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin said, “As oil and gas prices have increased enormously, we have managed to drive down our costs to maintain our prices at the same, or even more competitive levels and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future”.  Most coal merchants have seen an increase in people returning to the trusty open fire or solid fuel stove as hard pressed families juggle reduced incomes with increased energy costs. However, Robert Hudson, the 4th generation of his family of traditional Dublin coal merchants, continued “while there has never been a better time to enjoy the cosy comfort of a real fire, it’s also a perfect time to remind ourselves, and those around us, of a few simple safety tips.”

Coal Merchants Dublin Simple Safety Tips

1. Always use a Fire Guard on all open fires.

2. Never leave children or people with mobility difficulties alone near an open fire or solid fuel stove.

3. Be careful not to leave kindling, fire lighters, or exposed fuel close to the fire.

4. Never attempt to dry clothes by the fireside or solid fuel stove.

5. Be extremely careful using a mirror over the mantle, particularly children with loose clothing/night clothes.

6. Have your chimney swept at least one a year when mostly using smokeless fuel, and twice a year when using predominently bituminous coal (smokey coal), wood, briquettes or turf.

7. Install a carbon monoxide detector as with all oil, gas and solid fuel heating.

8. Install smoke alarms throughout your home  (and regularly check that the batteries are working).

9. Only use quality fuels that are approved and suitable for your particular fire or solid fuel stove.
10. CHECK THE BATTERIES in your Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors TODAY

Enjoy the warm and welcoming glow of a real fire with family and friends, or put your feet up and steal a few moments alone by the fireside with a good book or a movie, secure in the knowledge that everything is safe and sound.

Coal Merchants Dublin – Fuel Security, Is Coal the Future?

Coal Merchants Dublin

Security of Supply – Is Coal the future?

Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin are trying here to look at the way that coal has been used not only over the years, but over the millennia. From the earliest prehistoric times when our ancestors discovered that those lovely shiny black rocks could burn, through to using coal for cooking, heating and pottery, and right to the Industrial Revolution of the 1700s powered by coal and steam engines, coal has been a vital component of human development over millennia. Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin, remind us here that while tradition of coal goes back over thousands of years, the use of coal to produce electricty is pretty recent in real terms in the overall history of energy production. Even though we have seen the emergence of modern technologies over the years, coal as an energy solution is most certainly an attractive proposition for the future. Here we look at some of the pros and cons of coal as an energy solution:

Coal Merchants Dublin look at the pros and cons

Smokeless Coal Delivery Dublin, Crumlin Fuel Depot, Col Merchants Dublin

Traditional Coal Merchants Dublin

1. As coal merchants Dublin, we focus on availability – One of the biggest benefit of coal as an energy solution is its abundance. The United States Energy Information Administration recently published figures of more than 930 billion short tonnes of recoverable coal reserves worldwide. This represents more than 130 years supply of  already discovered, economically recoverable reserves of coal. As we progress into the future, it is not unreasonable to assume that there are many more billions of tonnes of coal reserves as yet undiscovered. Furthermore, it is far easier to establish their locations and extract the mineral using modern technologies than with any other energy sources. In addition there are huge resources worldwide in what was previously considered to be uneconomic mines, not least in our neighbouring island.

  2. Of Course as coal merchants Dublin, price is a major determination for Crumlin Fuel Depot as price filters down to the end user, our curtomer!  – Coal is indeed one of the cheapest accessible energy sources. In addition to its abundance, the actual systems for generating electricity from coal is cheaper than any alternatives,  even nuclear or hydroelectric power.

3. Safety – Nuclear power is indeed considered to be a very clean and safe energy resource. Meanwhile, energy and electricity generated from coal is considered much safer. It is clear that an incident at a coal powered plant in Ireland will not cause as widespread a disaster such as would be expected following an accident at a nuclear powered processing plant in Ireland.

Cons

Climate Change..- Coal,  Gas and Oil are forms of carbon, which on burning produces carbon dioxide (CO2).  This has long-term effects on weather and biodiversity. With regard to coal, various steps are being taken to address these issues. Today, with current technology, it is possible to filter out 99% of the tiny particles and remove more than 95% of the acid rain pollutants in coal. “Clean coal” technologies are here something that we have to look at. Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin will take a closer look at the exciting advent of “Carbon Capture and Collection” in another article very soon.

Cosy Modern Solid Fuel Stove

Solid Fuel Stoves making a big comeback,

Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin

 Solid Fuel Stoves Dublin

For a host of reasons as diverse as excellent value for money to concerns about energy and SECURITY OF SUPPLY , Solid Fuel Stoves are gaining hugely in popularity in homes all over Ireland, but particularly in the capital Dublin. With so many New & Stylish, cost effective and highly efficient Solid Fuel Stoves on the market in Ireland today, Leading Interior Designers often first create the whole “hearth” of the home with the latest Chic Solid Fuel Stove in the family livingroom or kitchen and expand out throughout the home from there. As you contemplate your choice of Modern Contemporary or Traditional Style Solid Fuel Stoves, there is a vast array of the most beautiful, most efficient and most cost effective Solid Fuel Stoves and wood burning stoves on display in showrooms all across Dublin, (and I will discuss some solid fuel stoves and solid fuel stoves suppliers/showrooms another time soon )

But first let me explore the kind of smokeless fuel that will give you the highest heat output and optimal performance in your new Solid Fuel Stoves.

Along with wood burning stoves, many of the stylish and highly efficient Solid Fuel Stoves available on the market in Dublin now are the highly acclaimed “Multi Fuel Stoves” or “Multi-Fuel Burners”. As that name suggests, you can burn most solid fuels and smokeless coal in these solid fuel stoves. Most of the SMOKELESS FUEL PRODUCTS we supply are very suitable for burning in these Multi-Fuel solid fuel stoves. Indeed, in most cases I would initially recommend our regular Smokeless Fuels such as our PREMIUM QUALITY MASTERBLEND or DIAMOND BLEND for use in most new multi fuel stoves. For ease of lighting and a more lively, flamey performance in the stove, our more easily manageable range of Smokeless Fuels is an excellent choice for most solid fuel stoves. Along with our Renewable, Carbon Neutral Firewood Logs, Bord na Mona Peat Briquettes, our NEW Coal Briquettes and even our traditional homely and aromatic Turf, the menu from which you can choose is extensive.

CLEARGLOW ANTHRACITE for Solid Fuel Stoves

Our High Quality Clearglow Anthracite is ultimately what you want to aspire to as the MAIN fuel supply in most multi fuel stoves / solid fuel stoves. It is at the highest end of the scale of smokeless fuels and burns differently to our regular Smokeless Coal. Clearglow anthracite is a high quality high heat output, extremely hard, naturally smokeless coal. It has a Higher Calorific Value, which means a higher heat output, and is perfect as the main fuel supply in most multi-fuel stoves / solid fuel stoves with a boiler providing constant hot water and optimum heat output from the radiators around the house.
It is a little harder to ignite and initially it is a little slower to get going in your solid fuel stove. But it is correspondingly much longer lasting and better value. Clearglow Anthracite is very responsive to the draught controls on modern solid fuel stoves and will burn for much longer, with a higher heat output and better overall performance. This is especially true in the very coldest winter weather, where for the sake of a shovelful or two of Clearglow Anthracite before bedtime you can keep your Solid Fuel Stove burning overnight. With just a little trial and error you can set the draught control on your solid fuel stove to the ideal level to put your fire into “sleep mode” and keep your home warm and toasty right throughout the coldest winter nights. Just turn up the air control again before refulling the next morning, and within minutes you have a blazing fire again. Because there is no need reset the fire and to fully refill the fire-box the next morning, nor indeed to reheat your home from scratch, there is little or no additional cost to keeping your home and your family warm and cosy as the overnight winter temperatures plummet outside. 24/7 heating is not only achievable with your solid fuel stove, but totally affordable.

ECOBRITE for Solid Fuel Stoves

ECOBRITE is a manufactured smokeless fuel that is an Ovoid, oblong or egg shaped, high heat output fuel that is designed for optimum performance in Multi Fuel Stoves & Solid Fuel Stoves. It is a Clean Burning, Lively & Flamely fuel that burns to a fine ash in solid fuel stoves. It is manufactured right here in Ireland by Arigna Fuels and is ideal for burning either alone in your solid fuel stoves, or in combination with our slower burning High Quality Clearglow Anthracite to give you the best of both worlds in most Solid Fuel Stoves or Multi Fuel Stoves.

ALL NEW SMOKELESS COAL BRIQUETTES for Solid Fuel Stoves

Manufactured to the highest specifications in Germany for solid fuel stoves, our All New Smokeless Coal Briquettes are the perfect addition to our High Quality Clearglow Anthracite or Ecobrite in your Solid Fuel Stove or Multi-Fuel Stove. Meeting Germany’s stringent “Polution Control Act” this smokeless coal briquette is Extremely Clean and Easy to Handle, Kind to Your Chimney, and Long Lasting in your Solid Fuel Stove.
Very Different to Bord Na Mona Briquettes, our All New Smokeless Coal Briquettes are made from Lignite, a young brown coal that is a clean burning, low emmissions smokeless fuel & a longer lasting addition to your solid fuel stove. Just two or three new coal briquettes on top of your Clearglow Anthracite or Ecobrite fire will not only add a cosy warm and friendly flame, but will burn for hours and add a real and longer lasting effect in your solid fuel stove.

FIREWOOD LOGS, TURF & BRIQUETTES for Solid Fuel Stoves

As you would expect, Dry Seasoned Firewood logs are perfect for Wood Burning Stoves, but are also suitable for many Solid Fuel Stoves as an addition to our recommended Smokeless Fuels. Kinder to the environment, Firewood Logs are a wholly renewable energy source and are considered to be CARBON NEUTRAL. Locally sourced Firewood Logs also provide a much needed economic impetus to indiginous and mostly small family run business’ in surrounding rural areas. Also contributing to local rural employment, Traditional Turf is also a favourite among many Solid Fuel Stove users. Not quite as clean on glass fronted Solid Fuel Stoves, the aroma of an occasional sod or two of Turf evokes a uniquely Traditional Irish sense of warmth and homliness. Bord Na Mona Briquettes are perfect for adding a friendly flame on the coldest winter nights, re-invigorating a low or slumbering fire, and are absolutely ideal for starting the fire quickly in your Solid Fuel Stove.

As with any manufactured device, you should consult the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your solid fuel stoves. All solid fuel stoves are manufactured to varying degrees of specification and as you would expect, the manufacturer is best placed to advise on what they believe is the most suitable type of fuels for the materials that they use in the manufacture of their particular solid fuel stoves

Solid Fuel Stoves, Dublin Showrooms

These days, there is a multitude of both modern contemporary style solid fuel stoves and the classic traditional style solid fuel stoves from which to choose, many of which are manufactured to the higest standards right here in Ireland. And there are even more bright and modern Solid Fuel Stoves Showrooms in Dublin for you to visit. With so many people returning to solid fuel heating in the recent past, competition is very strong among the many solid fuel stoves & solid fuel appliance suppliers/installers in Dublin so prices today are very keen indeed. Visit as many solid fuel stoves and solid fuel appliances showrooms as you can to take in the huge choice available. Compare not only the prices, but the quality and service of each, and talk to neighbours and friends to get personal recommendations.

Coal Merchants Dublin raises “Security of Supply”

Coal Merchants Dublin

Fuel – Security of Supply? Coal Merchants Dublin Raise the Flag

The Celtic Tiger spawned an upsurge in demand and usage of energy in Ireland. As we know that ship has unfortunately sailed, but the voracious appetite for energy in Ireland remains. The boom has long evaporated now, but our energy demands are still being met by a huge reliance on imported fossil fuels. As continuing political changes and social unrest in the main oil producing regions in the Middle East and North Africa along with the recently imposed embargo on Iranian oil imports ito Europe hit the newsdesks, Robert Hudson, owner of leading Dublin solid fuel supplier Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin Says “The energy security crisis that we face will remain a continuing challenge into the future. It remains to be seen if the major political upheavals in the Middle East and beyond will bring stability to the regions or will further tensions and fragmentations actually creep in over the coming years. Meanwhile an analysis of the facts here in Ireland provides an alarming insight.”

Coal Merchants Dublin review the facts and figures

* 95% of  natural gas used in Ireland is now imported.

*100% of oil usued in Ireland is imported.

*Imported fuels cost the Irish economy over 6 Billion Euro every year.

*  There is only approximately 11 days supply of gas stored in the country.

* This compares with a reported 92 days supply in France and 84 days supply in Germany.

(*Source; The Ecology Foundation)

The facts and figures above show just how vulnerable we are to any interruption to supply, even for short periods. In recent years, the bulk of our gas was sourced in the North Sea, but over the coming years we will become increasingly dependant on gas imports from the various former Soviet Union states, Central Asia, and other politically volatile nations. Meanwhile, our oil will largely be imported from North African and Middle Eastern Countries. We have seen a sea-change in the political landscape in the Middle East in recent times, but it remains to be seen how the fragile position there will effect stability of both price and supply of energy in that region into the future. And now with the recently imposed embargo on Iranian oil imports into Europe, what effect will that bring to the mix?

Coal Delivers!

Mr Hudson said today, “The most abundant fuel is of course coal, with an estimated 850 billion tonnes of proven coal reserves worldwide. As such, it is typically not associated with market crises or price spikes. In addition there are huge resources worldwide in what was previously considered to be uneconomic mines, not least in our neighbouring island.” He continued “Coal is also easily stored and does not suffer from intermittency problems. Of Course as coal merchants Dublin, price is a major determination for Crumlin Fuel Depot as price filters down to the end user, our customer! – Coal is indeed one of the cheapest accessible energy sources. In addition to its abundance, the actual systems for generating electricity from coal are cheaper than any alternatives, even nuclear or hydroelectric power. While coal is only a relatively small proportion of the total primary energy requirement in Ireland at only 9.4%, it is considered to be one of the most secure fossil fuels for Ireland”. The Coal Merchants Dublin CEO then went on to explain, “In energy production worldwide, carbon capture and storage (CCS) may prove to be a breakthrough solution for coal, cutting carbon emissions by up to 85%, (but theoretically by up to 100%). When this is factored in, coal becomes the cleanest fossil fuel of all.” * (*Source; Forfas)

Coal Merchants Dublin Says, Carbon Neutral Firewood can Fuel The Way!

Industry and transport are by far the main demand on these limited resources, but we can also look at how we heat our homes from a different prospective. For many reasons, not least the economic challenges we now face, Coal Merchants Dublin report a return to the trusty OPEN FIRE and stylish, cost effective and highly efficient SOLID FUEL STOVES in many homes across the capital city and beyond. Not only a warm and welcoming focal point on these wintery evenings, the open fire and solid fuel stove can provide a more easily managed method of heating our homes, and help to keep those unexpected bills at bay. There is an array of stylish and highly efficient wood burning stoves, multi fuel stoves and solid fuel appliances available which can provide 24 hour heating to the whole house. Coal merchants Dublin have also recently reported an upsurge in the sale of firewood logs in the Dublin area. Mr Hudson said, “Renewable Energy in the form of Firewood has an important part to play in home heating today. Wood is a carbon neutral, indigenous resource to Ireland. It is a sustainable, secure and stable supply that is constantly replenished here in Ireland”. “We see more and more customers using firewood logs in both open fires and wood burning stoves. We rarely do coal deliveries in Dublin now without even a couple of bags of logs with each coal delivery” he continued. “Because wood is considered carbon neutral, even when it is burned with coal or smokeless fuel in an open fire, it helps deliver a reduction in the CO2 emissions. In fact, when coal and firewood logs are burned together in equal measure, the CO2 emissions from the fire are lower than that of both heating oil and natural gas”, Mr Hudson stated. He said, “From our Crumlin Fuel Depot, and also speaking to other coal merchants in Dublin, the story is the same. There is an increased interest in wood as a sustainable, renewable energy resource, and a genuine interest in the fact that together firewood logs and smokeless coal deliver lower CO2 emissions”.
Under the European Renewables Directive, the Irish Government has set targets for renewable penetration into each energy market by 2020, with a target of 12% of heating demand. So locally sourced firewood can play a significant role in helping to achieve that target.
