Coal Merchants Dublin – Simple Safety Tips

Simple Safety Tips for Open Fires & Solid Fuel Stoves from Coal Merchants Dublin

Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin. Smokeless coal delivery Dublin south. Coal Dublin.

Solid Fuel Stove - Coal Merchants Dublin

As austerity bites everywhere and oil prices continue on an upward spiral, Coal Merchants across the nation have seen a slight but welcomed upturn in business. Meanwhile, natural gas prices have increased by more than 30% in Ireland in the last year alone. Some of these are returning customers who had changed to oil or gas heating some years ago when times were better, but are now using their existing open fire again in the evenings and at weekends as a suppliment to their main supply, and to significantly reduce their oil or gas bills at the same time. Others are people who are now discovering the warm and welcoming wonder of an open fire for the first time. Furthermore, an increasing number of families are installing one of the many stylish and highly efficient solid fuel stoves that are available on the market now. What’s the common denominator among these people? 1. More predictable and more easily managed bills and 2. The unbeatable cosy comfort of a real fire.
Robert Hudson of Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin said, “As oil and gas prices have increased enormously, we have managed to drive down our costs to maintain our prices at the same, or even more competitive levels and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future”.  Most coal merchants have seen an increase in people returning to the trusty open fire or solid fuel stove as hard pressed families juggle reduced incomes with increased energy costs. However, Robert Hudson, the 4th generation of his family of traditional Dublin coal merchants, continued “while there has never been a better time to enjoy the cosy comfort of a real fire, it’s also a perfect time to remind ourselves, and those around us, of a few simple safety tips.”

Coal Merchants Dublin Simple Safety Tips

1. Always use a Fire Guard on all open fires.

2. Never leave children or people with mobility difficulties alone near an open fire or solid fuel stove.

3. Be careful not to leave kindling, fire lighters, or exposed fuel close to the fire.

4. Never attempt to dry clothes by the fireside or solid fuel stove.

5. Be extremely careful using a mirror over the mantle, particularly children with loose clothing/night clothes.

6. Have your chimney swept at least one a year when mostly using smokeless fuel, and twice a year when using predominently bituminous coal (smokey coal), wood, briquettes or turf.

7. Install a carbon monoxide detector as with all oil, gas and solid fuel heating.

8. Install smoke alarms throughout your home  (and regularly check that the batteries are working).

9. Only use quality fuels that are approved and suitable for your particular fire or solid fuel stove.
10. CHECK THE BATTERIES in your Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors TODAY

Enjoy the warm and welcoming glow of a real fire with family and friends, or put your feet up and steal a few moments alone by the fireside with a good book or a movie, secure in the knowledge that everything is safe and sound.

Coal Merchants, Dublin, talks about simple home insulation.

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Crumlin Fuel Depot, Home Insulation.

Crumlin Fuel Depot, Coal Merchants Dublin. Smokeless coal delivery dublin all areas. The green agenda has been around for quite a while now, and sometimes it is paradoxically seen as something of a “dirty word”. Yes, there is the tree hugging image of people with nothing better to do, but if you talk to any good Coal Merchant in Dublin they will tell you that this is not always the case. Indeed, there are many ways of making much better use of the valuable natural resources available to us. The transport of both goods and people is the big energy user in Ireland. This ranges from road and rail transport inland, to the air and sea transport of people and goods entering and leaving the country. Industry is also a big user of energy, and home heating is another.

Coal Merchants Dublin

Speaking to Dublin Coal Merchant Robert Hudson of Crumlin Fuel Depot this week, he explained that while properly insulating our homes is vitally important to both reduce energy use and save money, some of the easiest ways of insulating our homes are also among the cheapest. “It is very often the simple things that we can start on to make a difference” said Mr Hudson. “We are all familiar with the most important things like loft insulation, lagging jackets, double glazing etc.” the head of Crumlin Fuel Depot in Dublin said. “By all means you should investigate these excellent insulation measures if you haven’t already done so” he said, “but its the smaller and cheaper little things that we can do around the house that gets us into the “energy saving habit”

“As  Coal Merchants in Dublin for over 30 years now, I have come across some of the greatest little tips for insulating your home” Robert said. We all know that home insulation measures are important in reducing your energy use and saving on heating costs, but sometimes it’s the simple little things that can help too.

“I have many years experience as a coal merchant in Dublin, but more importantly, I have over 30 years experience of coal deliveries to my many customers across all of Dublin” said Robert from his Crumlin Fuel Depot base. “ I studied with the “Solid Fuel Advisory Service” in the UK” he continued, “but it’s the experience of talking directly with my customers over the years that I value most”. From his Dublin base, Robert Hudson said “Not only am I more then 30 years carrying out Coal Deliveries in Dublin, I’m proud to say I’m actually the third generation coal merchant in our Dublin family.

Crumlin Fuel Depot’s very simple and inexpensive tips to help get you started are;

1; Use very heavy curtains on all external windows in the winter to keep the heat in, and the cold out. This is the easiest and most inexpensive measure, especially if you already have some heavy curtains stored away at home. Do be careful not to cover radiators though, as this will obviously be counterproductive

2; For External Doors, you can buy some simple “stick-on” draught excluders from your local hardware store. You will be surprised at how easy some of them are to apply. As you might expect, they simply stick on to the base of your doors.

3; You can make something cheap and cheerful with your long old colourful socks, or even old tights, stuffed tightly with old rags, cloths etc. It’s quite simply to make the handiest draught excluding “snake” for the base of your outer doors.

4; The “letter box” in your front door can be a source of chilly draughts. Check it with your hand on a windy day. Again, there are simple and inexpensive options available from your local hardware store, but just like with the draught excluder “snake” above, you can make a hand little draught excluder for your letter box. However, do remember not to impede your postman as he delivers your letters in the mornings.

5; There are handy reflective sheets available that can be easily placed between your radiators and the external walls. However, it’s very easy to make your own if you can get your hands on some sheets of cardboard, and some kitchen tin foil. Simply apply the foil to a suitably sized sheet of cardboard, and then slot it into place behind the radiator, with the foil facing toward the radiator. This can help reflect heat back into the room. For bigger radiators, you can make two or three sheets to slot in side by side.

These are just some simple little tips to get you started in the “energy saving habit”.  Much bigger savings can be achieved by properly insulating our homes throughout.

Medieval Mining in Ireland – Source: Coal Merchants Dublin

Coal Merchants Dublin. The leading suppliers of coal since the Middle ages

The collieries that once dominated many parts of Ireland have now gone and the pit heaps have been reclaimed and naturalised into the landscape, but there is no doubting the important influence that coal mining has had upon shaping the modern character of Ireland.

It seems probable that Tipperary is the oldest intensive coal mining district in the country and evidence suggests that the Celtic Peoples burned and excavated coal in the region. But it was not until the 13th and 14th centuries that it became more widespread with demand spurred on by ever expanding towns and an increasing population. Among those to profit from the increased demand were the Barons of Tipperary, but it was the Coal merchants Dublin who stood to gain the most.

This was primarily because Dublin was a seaport and as the demand for coal grew and Ireland’s hard to Quarrie supples, where insufficient, The coal merchants Dublin, dominated the market. In fact they became so powerful they controlled the coal prices in Dublin, but also in the rest of the country.

England became the coal suppliers Dublin main source, especialy the mines of North East England

Coal is mentioned in the records of County Durham as early as the 12th century, when the Boldon Book (1183) mentions a coal miner at Escomb. It states that the coal miner provided coal for the iron-work of the ploughs at nearby Coundon. The book also records that the smiths of Sedgefield and Bishop Wearmouth were making use of local coal. But most of the early coal mines of the region, were along the banks of the Tyne where seams were shallow and easily mined. As early as the mid 1300s, mines were recorded at Cockfield, Coundon, Hett, Lanchester and Ferryhill, along with others further east at Lumley and Rainton. The Lumley mine was owned by the monks of Finchale Priory, near Durham and consisted of a drift mine, with recesses for candles to light the mine.

In our Next article we shall discuss Coal Prices Dublin and how to find cheap coal in Dublin

Is Coal Merchants Dublin Anthracite Mined In Ireland

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

The major anthracite Mines in Ireland were located in Ballingary

Unfortunately anthracite is no longer mined on a commercial basis in Ireland.
Anthracite is a hard, naturally smokeless fuel with a high calorific value and low ash content. The coalfield was positioned in the Slieve Ardagh region and was an extension of the Leinster coalfields. The deposits, which were deeply faulted, comprise of three strata, the lowest averaging nine inches in thickness and the other seams being roughly two feet thick. Due to the inclined coal layer acting as a slippage plane, considerable amounts of the deposits had been crushed and combined with the upper and lower boundary shale. This resulted in a lesser commercially viable content known locally as culm. Due to its high elevation, melting snow in the Slieve Ardagh area intermittently resulted in considerable volumes of flood-water. This regularly threatened to overwhelm the mines normal output of quality anthracite.
